When in trouble and the ball is sitting down in the rough make sure that you take your medicine and get back onto the fairway even if it means playing a wedge out sideways. When playing this shot grip down the shaft slightly and set up with the ball towards the back of your stance with your weight favouring your left side. This helps you swing on a steeper angle to attack the ball. Keep the hands firm so the clubface remains square to the ball through the shot so it is not pulled off line by the thick grass. Make a 3/4 swing with an even more accelerating downswing to power the ball from the rough as you strike the ball first and then cut through the grass.
Don't be greedy and attempt to hit the ball too far from heavy rough. You may only manage to shift it a few yards and end up in even worse trouble. Play a higher lofted club to ensure that you get the ball out of the rough.
